Villa Mankani sits inside a working mango plantation just outside Dambulla, in the heart of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya, or Sinhagiri ("Lion Rock"), is a 5th-century rock fortress and palace built by King Kashyapa I on a 200-metre granite outcrop, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. Visitors climb through the paws of a monumental lion gateway, the only surviving part of the original palace entrance, to reach the ruins of the royal complex at the summit.

Along the way, the route passes the Sigiriya frescoes, a series of 5th-century paintings of celestial maidens, and the Mirror Wall, once polished enough to reflect the king's image and now covered in centuries of visitor graffiti. From the top, the views stretch across the surrounding jungle and reservoirs of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, with Pidurangala Rock visible in the distance.
